On this July 1st and with temperatures in the very high 90's, it feels kind of strange to talk about coat closets.
The truth is that this past winter has been the only time in many years that we actually used our coats, maybe that is why our coat closet was a horrific disaster. LOL
A few weeks ago I was inspired by a post from a fellow blogger and friend, Vel at Life & Home at 2102.
She organized her closet beautifully, so I decided to give it a try. Have to tell you, this was a whole day project. :)
Our coat closet is located in the center of the hallway, between the entrance hall and kitchen/living area.
And this is what it looked like. Not my proudest moment! :)
It is a good thing you can't see behind all those coats.
And this is now.
It was very difficult to take pictures of such a small space, but let me show you the changes I made.
I did start by emptying the whole closet and gave it a good cleaning.
After that was done, I cut to size a shelf we had in the garage and installed it in the back of the closet.
When the shelf was in place, I sprayed painted three old baskets from Dollar Tree and added some small labels to them.
They hold scarfs, hats and mittens.
You all know I love to use things I already have and that was the case this time around. I have this mirror that I bought in Germany when we were stationed there in the mid 80's.
It has been sitting in my "treasure closet" for a long time now, so I gave it a little update using some simple rope.
Under the jackets, I added a shoe rack from Target that holds the shoes we are mostly using now.
Also at Target, I bought this pretty accent rug.
Love the color!
To get things more organized, I made a small board to hang our umbrellas.
I used three knobs I had purchased at Hobby Lobby a while back.
On the opposite side, I used a shelf I had to which I added some hooks and an old frame. I painted everything white.
The hooks hold a couple of keys we all use often.
Also, I added a small glass bowl from Dollar Tree so this family of mine can empty their pockets when they get home every day. Hey! Got to get my tips somehow! LOL
And just over the weekend, I added a small sign.
Before and after.
I was able to make these changes for under $20.00.
What do you think? Better?
Thank you all for stopping by.
Tuesdays at Our Home is still live, I would love if you come join us and link your beautiful projects.
See you all soon!

ReplyDeleteOMG what a great transformation. The idea to put the rack at an angle is GENIUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Our coat closet is even smaller than yours but I am going to see if we can redo it. You have inspired me!
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute space, Maria Elena! I would never have thought you had that much room behind the coats in the first picture. It's really a nice size closet. I love what you did to fix it up and that you used stuff you already had.
ReplyDeleteThis looks amazing! We are about to move into a much smaller home. Maybe I can use some of your ideas in our coat closet.
ReplyDeleteOh My goodness, what a wonderful transformation. It looks great, I'd be camping out in there on a big floor pillow reading a book or something just to
ReplyDeletebe able to enjoy it.............lol
and now it really is a walk in closet, you would not have known that before...........If my coat closet wasn't just the size to fit coats I would be inspired to
redo mine too.........lol Good job.......
Blessings, Nellie
What a way to utilize that space! I use the top of our coat closet for storing extra décor pillows. I am a sucker for pillows and have ran out of places to store them. Anymore when I make a new pillow I make it open in the back so it can cover a pillow that I already have. Helps cut down a lot. You did a great job on your closet! Thanks for sharing it with SYC.
ReplyDeletehugs,
Jann
